Amongst is the creative design studio of Andrea Wong and Maxime Monin, architects trained and registered in the UK, now based in Singapore. Founded in 2022, it is a joint project to study and use forms and their cultural significance in the practice of architecture.
We believe that our experience of the world is mediated by how we represent it. The various technological mediums in which we do that thus shape how we understand, act and function. As designers, we choose to engage with architecture as one of these apparatuses through which perception is organised. Part of this practice is an accumulation of knowledge on how meaning emerges from a common consensus over time and across society. The collective is therefore an integral part of our identity — ‘Amongst’ being our embedded-ness within it.
We are excited by the notion that no material reality exists in isolation — our experience of space is reliant not only on the physical forms present but also upon dominant forms in wider culture. Therefore, it is possible for us to use this shared meaning of forms
We are excited by the notion that no material reality exists in isolation — our experience of space is reliant not only on the physical forms present but also upon dominant forms in wider culture. Therefore, it is possible for us to use this shared meaning of forms
as a tool to
evoke an additional dimension that goes beyond a space’s immediate function.
We work with symbolic and sensuous shapes that we transform, distort, evolve, to bring back memories and feelings from one’s collective unconscious — what the eyes may not grasp but the mind can perceive.
Referencing artefacts from diverse sources across architecture, art, literature and film is a vital process in our methodology. Shared meaning can be signified across disciplines and be more effectual with a layered approach. It is our desire for the built environment to again hold within it mythologies and storytelling— an advocation for the permanence of architecture. Finally, we appreciate that the process of meaning-making cannot be dictated but is contingent upon the participation of the user.
