The Brewmaster House is the conservation building on the corner plot of Anchorpoint. It is what remains of Singapore’s first brewery, the Archipelago Brewery Company (“ABC”), producing the iconic Anchor Beer. The site used to be composed of a large factory behind the house and a long conveyor belt spanning across Alexandra Road (where the current pedestrian bridge to Ikea is located).

The Brewmaster House is a rare example of 1920s/1930s Art & Craft style in Singapore. It features classical motifs made into simple patterns and designs. After numerous occupations, this conservation building progressively lost its original simplicity.

We proposed the brief to be two-fold : to clear the clutter that has built up from previous occupations and to renovate the building with a simpler and fresher look recalling its original style.

The decluttering process happened primarily on the inside. The beautiful carpentry of the roof was hidden by a secondary ceiling which we removed, alongside an accumulation of disused M&E. Secondary flooring, partition walls were also removed, and the original timber windows and doors were restored.
It resulted in brighter interiors with spacious open spaces and double height ceiling on the 2nd floor. We emphasised the original five-foot way to retrieve this charming transition space between the inside and the outside.

The facade paint design accentuates the geometrical features typical of this style, in particular the chamfered openings. The green-coloured line work accentuates the variation of the chamfered corner motif from the ground floor transoms to the upper floor windows, capped by the high-hipped roof edge. A simple white paint background brightens the whole building.
